May convert from megaflow overflow to hoffer gurgle buster, need input

I have some gurgling I cannot seem to get rid of so I want to try this Hoffer method. My question is most of the videos and instructions I see show it way down near the bottom of the tank and I don't want to do that since I have a 210g tank and it'd sound like niagra falls. So I am going to have it up higher where the other standpipe was but my question is, should I start at 1.25" and reduce to 1" like the megaflow or can I just go 1" from the bottom up?
