Media replacement?

I have an aquaclear filter on my 3 gallon with 3 types of media in it, I was just wondering how often I need to replace the media?

Ditch the carbon and get polyfill. Then change the polyfill every few weeks. Never change the biomax and just squeeze the sponge in old tank water (replace when it's literally falling apart)
