I am looking for a filter for a 2.5 gallon with a betta...so it must have flow control and be submersible (no hobs).

I have a sand shark right now, and am looking for something smaller...any help appreciated!

What kind of filter did you get? I was thinking of this one:

The DJ-50 -- I've had the mini too and it's too small to be of any good, IMO.

I wasn't too impressed with the Hagen Stingray either.

You could also use a sponge filter, and get a gang valve to control the flow. The only drawback is that it would take up a lot of space on the bottom of a small tank.
