I know of a person who is giving away a 55 gallon tank for free, the only problem is that it doesnt have the top lip. How would you go about fixing this? Can it easily be replaced?

As in the top frame is missing? Thats a structural part of the tank, without it it's good for reptiles with no water. They can be purchased and replaced but for what a 55g cost I wouldn't bother.
