Will need more information for a complete answer. My overflows run about 5 inches into my 7 inch filter sock to cut down on splashing noise.

Building a peninsula aquarium so either returns will run a longer distance or my overflows to my sump.

My vote would be for the overflow to run longer length if only to get aas much power as you can from the return pump. Less distance to return the water more gph.

+1 Carey. Your paying to pump the water up while the gravity return is free.

Just making sure the overflows wouldn't drain to slow because of the length and end up having to dial my pump back.
