Hi guys, I'm located in Australia and I'm looking for a protein skimmer for my 30 gallon reef tank I understand I require a protein skimmer recommended for double your tank volume. I do not have a sump so the skimmer must be HOB. Price doesn't phase me too much but budget is nothing above about $170.

Cheers

Going to be stocking many corals, not 100% sure on stock as I'm open to change but possibly a couple clowns, fire fish, few inverts and gobies.

Tunze make an in-tank nano skimmer, I used to use one on my 55g might do the job ;)

I'm really worried about ammonia and stuff, I know it won't remove the need for w/c but it will decrease the amount I need to clean as salt is ridiculously priced here

I currently have a 20g and don't use a skimmer and it's fine. Weekly water changes will be all you need... Where abouts in Australia are you?

I'm in Melbourne, what percentage to you change? So basically I need power heads a light and a heater live rock will do the filtration for me?

Yes it can. If you fill up your tank in time you may need to add a skimmer but for now that will be fine. I am south suburbs in melb and my closest reef shop sells 25L drums of salt and ro for $3.

Yeah cool thanks for your help I'm in North eastern suburbs, a 4kg bag of salt makes 120 litres and that's about $40

Oh no worries, I didn't realise you were planning in making your own. I buy pre made salt and ro-di water (I live in an apartment and that easier for me) Coburg aquarium is about your best bet then for livestock - I've been there a couple of times but I got to be honest it's a long way to go for me and the mentone and moorabin ones are a bit better ;)

Yeah I've visited coburg multiple times (45 min drive) I'm impressed with their stock but I am not a fan of their customer service at all. I just find it'll be easier to make my own since it's a long way from many sw specialists

Just my opinion, don't get a tunze 9002. I have one on a 30 and I hate it.

Even after doing the airline mod it still barely pulls green tea.

Honestly that's the only one I was recommended that would fit in the back of my AIO. But if your doing a HOB your have much better options. HOB is probably what I will end up doing.

I had a reef octopus 110 on my 55 and I loved it. Although I haven't used any besides that I would say their other skimmers are probably good quality too.
