polishing canister filter????

I have been thinking about getting a canister filter, with pleated polishing filter. I was thinking of running this for just a few hours a week to "polish" the water.

1. Is this a good idea?

2. What is a good cheap (if there is such a thing) one to get?

marineland makes a pretty cheap polisher $48.50, its a H.O.T. Magnum that pumps 250gph I have one that seems to work good. They also make a bigger one that pumps 350gph but it's not a hang on tank, runs around $75.00
