Is a 800 GPH power head wave maker enough for a 55ga tank?

What are your plans for the tank? That will help us figure out how much flow. A FOWLR can get by with around 10x the volume where a full blown SPS reef will need as much as 50x volume

As of right now we do plan on doing live rock, but no corals anytime soon.

I'd add a 1500 gph PH. if it were me your fish wont mind the extra flow and it will save you an upgrade later.

In a tank your size a single 1500 may be too much flow from a single source. The two 800s would be best.

Aim the 800 at the 1500 that will give you a chaotic flow through out the tank It amounts to 41x tank volume The rocks will slow down the flow also. I have around 10k gph in my 180 it sounds like a lot but if you ever dove on a reef you'd understand it's nothing
