Powerhead clogging

About once every other day I have to clean the intake of my powerhead due to plant debris and small snails crawling into it. Is there any way to help prevent or reduce that? Click image for larger version

I have good results with the feet of hosiery. New, simply cut, rinsed, rubber banded on. Black trouser sock type might do well, since those tend to be a bit thinner and won't interfere with flow.
