Protein Skimmer and Filtration

I am looking to start a 55 gallon saltwater tank and I was wondering what the best protein skimmer for the money would be? I definitely don't want the cheap as dirt crappy models, but I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money either. Also, in addition to the live rock I will have and the skimmer, what other filtration will I need?

Rock + skimmer + regular PWCs will do just fine for filtration. As for a decent model, it depends if you have a sump or not?

I don't have a sump. I am currently in college and the place I live in really doesn't have enough space for one.

You'll need a HOB skimmer. I like the Reef Octopus Skimmers myself. Take a look here and see what you like. With skimmers, it doesn't hurt to get one rated more than the tank volume you have.
