Can a DC 12v bilge pump be wired to AC? Through a power supply or one of those boxy plug-in thingies? (Yeah. Not an electrician)

I make fake rock. I have a tank that has been running for a year with 100% fake rock and is still looking great. ...so I'm working on making aquarium equipment encased/hidden in my fake rock. I want to make free-standing overflow "towers" with a submersible pump feeding 2+ outlets. Bilge pumps are small (can be), powerful and cheep.

Another question is can they run continually or even repeatedly off and on (wave maker)?

Yes, just get a 12v DC power supply and make sure you get the positives together and negatives together.

Sweet. Dose anyone know if a bilge pump can be run 24/7 or is it only meant to run for short periods?
