The bigger pipes mean more water can fit diwn it faster. 1 inch PVC only can hold so much water. Like think if you had a section of 1 inch PVC that was just 6 inches long and had a cap on one end like a cup. And u dip it in the water. It wouldn't hold as much water as a 6 inch section of 2 inch PVC. Kinda like that except different. Get it?

I would have 2 overflows and 2 returns one of each at each end you get better flow that way

Ok I'm sorry but I'm not following you I do have two 1" DIY PVC over flow that will drain into the sump I don't understand about one of each end do you mean two separate return pumps in the sump instead of one sorry this is all new to me

You can run two return pipes of one pump you just use a T AND ONE FLOW TAP ON EACH RETURN
