Question about Ultraviolet Sterilizers

Fairly new to this hobby and have been doing a lot of reading on this forum. I have learned alot from reading all the post! I have a 75 gallon tank with both mechanical and wet/dry system. Thinking of adding a UV Sterilizer.

Are UV Sterilizers worth the investment? Will they help with ick?

I have a tang that has alot of white spots suddenly, still eating fine and swimming all over the tank. No other fish have any spots.

Was wondering in the UV Sterilizers might help the fish from getting ick when stressed.

Thanks in Advance 8)

Chris

Some people swear by them, personally I haven't used one in about 5 years.

Very little, ick is a large organism and sometimes will make it through an appropriately sized UV with nothing more than a sunburn. Also UVs can only kill what goes through them, it will have no effect on the ick on the fish.

The best advice I can give is to quarantine all fish when you get them, treating prophylactically with Hyposalinity, this will prevent the introduction of ick into your system. At this point in time you need to treat the tang and every other fish in your system in a QT for ick, leaving the display tank fallow for 4 weeks to insure all the ick in the display has died.
