My Eheim 2217 sometimes makes a whirring sound even though both the inlet and outlet is completely submerged. Also at times I see air bubbles exuding from the outlet pipe. I checked but there aren't any leaks. Anyone experienced this or knows whats this all about?
I'm running the filter 24*7 except when feeding/cleaning. I got this in January this year.

Air bubbles coming from the outlet typically indicate that there is air in the canister.

You might try shutting it off an re-priming it.

Also, you have been cleaning it, yes?

I clean it every 3-4 months. Cleaned it yesterday again. Strangely, there was algae growing on the inside of the inlet pipe that was blocking the flow while there was nothing on the outside to raise suspicion. Is it possible that the algae was oxygenating and hence the air bubbles from the outlet pipe? Also the 'whirring' noise seems to have stopped for now.

The oxygen added to the water by a plant doesn't add air.

You don't have anything that could be adding air to the intake do you? No air stones or anything similar?
