question on what sump is

Hi i have a question can anyone tell me what a sump is, i have a 55 gallon reef tank, only about a month old, would a 20 gallon or so sump help, how does it work do u put ur protien skimmer and main filter in it?? if anyone has any pics of this it would be great!!!! any help you can give me on telling me what to do would help alot thanks.

well oversized skimmer and LR are your main filter..
