I have a protein skimmer of unknown manufacture and the pump is going out on it. The pump is a rio 1700 which puts out about 600 gph and has two intake air hoses attached to it. I would like to save some money and just replace the pump as to the body of the skimmer is still good. Question is could I upgrade the pump to a needle wheel design and increase the effectiveness of the skimmer

Hi . I'm no expert but it shouldn't matter what pump you use as long as it enough for your tank.

If you can retrofit it to work it should be fine

Should be fine the more bubbles the better.
