Return pump in sump "run dry"?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an interest in aquariums or fish keeping!
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
What kind of pump is it? Some pumps will overheat if run dry and will have to be replaced. On the other hand, perhaps only the rotor is damaged from spinning dry and a replacement will have you up and running. If you can't hear or feel a faint hum when it's plugged in I'm gonna hazard a guess that its dead.
