Rio 600 a heat monster!!

I put a Rio 600 power jet into my 29 gal tank, came home from work the other day and temp in tank was 86!!

Turned the heater off (Was set at 77and was not active)
Removed the Rio and temp is slowly coming back to around 80

Anyone else have any issue with power jets heating up the water?

Luckily all that was in the tank is listed below

do you have a lid on your tank? IMO keep your tank lid free(unless you have jumpers) and if that happens again float a bag of ice cubes until your water temp drops

lid holds the lights... do you know of a good raise light system for a 29 gal tank?
Have seen many a post where lights are about 3-4 inches above tank rim

Can you buy just those brackets that the light sits on?

well my skimmer used to have a RIO 600 SVT pump on it. never noticed the heat problem.

what I can tell you is that RIO pumps and powerheads are pretty low quality, and have a history of going bad in under 12 months of use.
My skimmer now runs a Maxijet instead. Those things are almost bulletproof.

like malkore said - go with Maxijet. And yes you can buy the little "legs" for your lights for about $5. Also if you're crafty, you could hang your light food for thought
