I am thinking about getting a water treatment system for XMas as a gift to myself and my wife. The wife only drinks Brita or Pur water, so we go through a lot of cartridges anyway. I am looking at water systems on eBay from a couple sellers:

dvoneb7:

filterdirect:

Some of these are RO, and others are RO/DI. Is the extra de-ionizing step very beneficial to a reef tank?

For mixing salt water. I am using distilled water that I buy locally for 40 to 60 cents a gallon :(

Yes, I added a DI to my RO because of high PO2. It reduced them significantly enough to solve my cyno problems.
I would spend the extra few bucks, well worth it IMO.

Normal RO will only remove 70% of Silicate and Phosphate. The Hi-S RO membranes filter out above 95%. DI filters out 99.97%.

buy the di unit as well, will be much more beneficial for you, (and your wife) and you won't have to worry about buying the di unit later on anyway....may cost a little more now, but paying shipping all over again will pay for itself.

RO+DI it is :) Not sure if I want to get a setup through dvoneb7 or filterdirect. Anyone have an opinion on these setups and how they compare? They look pretty much the same to me. I would get a full system with the drinking water container and the other add ons.

I have the filters direct and have been happy with it. It is hooked up to a float switch for top offs and I make water in a garbage can for topping off my QT. It has been running for 4 or 5 months and I still get very low readings on my tds meter.
