As was mentioned, an intake sponge like that for the fluval edge would help(I use it in both my tanks). However, any healthy fish should more than easily be able to swim away from the intake. If their getting stuck, you either have a REDICULOUS filter that belongs in a pool or the fish is on it's death bed.

The only pre filter sponge I use is on my fry tank, and I even remove that once they are big enough not to get sucked up through the strainer
