skimmer making loud splashing noise - is it normal?

i have an aquac ev-180 skimmer running in my sump. the water coming out of the return gate valve pours the water back into the sump, making a loud splashing noise. do i need to raise the water level in the sump higher to reduce the noisy waterfall effect? if so, will the skimmer work properly. since i am a beginner, i wasn't aware that the skimmer would be that noisy. i have heard of noisy venturis, however, i did not know about the waterfall noise.

That is one way to correct the problem... Can you add some PVC fittings to make the water drain down into the water?
