1) other skimmers that i have used so far use the adjustable air valve, which i don't use because the silencer in place (or show i be using the air valve that came with the unit?)

I don't think there is any good reason to lower the amount of air pulled in. After all, this is what makes a skimmer pump good or bad- how much air draw. The more air, the better.

It's not a bad skimmer. It depends on what size system you are considering it for.

also should I do a canister filter or just the sump? I will be putting the kessil 360 on it for lighting

Woo kessil! Just the sump is fine, the canister will just become a nitrate trap

Thank is what i have been hearing about Canisters the Kessil is suppose to be the best light for a cube or so Ive Read
