So confused about sterilizer

I have a 75 gal tank live rock and fish. I've been advised to get a UV sterilizer to prevent ickk and all other diseases. Will that help I had 3 fish die of ick. What would you recommend getting if you agree.

How long ago did your fish die from ich? Do you have any other fish left in the tank? If so, you will need to QT the remaining fish and leave the main tank fallow for 6-8 weeks. This is the only way to truly get rid of the parasite. UV sterilizers typically have too high a flow rate to kill the parasite but it will kill off a lot of bacteria. The usefulness of UV sterilizers is debated often on here.

When you QT your fish you can treat them with either hyposalinity or Cuppramine. Either are effective. Do NOT remove any inverts as they will die from either of these treatments and are not hosts to ich. HTH

I have the twister UV. The water spirals around the light allowing more kill time. I personally believe they help with control of Ick but only to the free swimming ick. Any that is on the bottom or on fish will not be affected. If you really want to kill the parasite keep tank fallow for several weeks and treat fish. I`ve also seen reports that UV`s get rid of algea spores. Maybe Steve can kill that thought like he did on the ground probe. Just kidding Steve You are the man. That was an eye opener on the ground probe. I would reccomend a UV

They will help give you background info on how the UV light works to yoru benifit as well as help you decide if its worth the investment.

I like my UV for help with keeping my water nice and clear, but IME they do very little for parasite irradication.
