Not a hardware question, but....

Pool filter sand (cheap, light colored)

Or

Black Tahitian moon sand (moderate cost, dark obviously)

GO!

I like the look of tahitian moon sand much more. Have you checked out black blasting sand? It gives your tank a very nice look as well, but is fairly inexpensive at $7-8 for a 50-pound bag.

Horrible horrible experience with the blasting sand. Smelled like tar and super greasy. Tossed it and good moon sand. Ugh. It was worth a shot and $8 isn't a big loss at least :)
