Can a sump provide as good a filtration as say an FX5.If so i would just prefer a sump because i like to build things and it would be cheaper also. The system would eventually be connected to a 125 gallon with a few oscars in it. I know biological filtration would be better on a sump. But how about mechanical. im wanting to try a pvc overflow type setup.Whats the pros and cons..Thanks for your help.

I would do it. For the price of an FX5 online ($200-250 shipped) you can't really beat it. Fill the center of two fo the three trays with Seachem Matrix and you will have more than enough biological media. A canister is much better at mechanical filtration, especially important with fish like oscars. If it were my tank I wouldn't use a sump.
