I run all my middle baffels up to the top of the tank. And about the hob filter. No u don't have to keep it on there but I keep one just in case I need to setup a quick qt tank

Need to? No. To me, one of the perks of the sump is to get rid of as much stuff hanging on the tank as possible for aesthetics. There isnt any reason you cant use it in the sump or, as paul suggested, use it on a qt or some other tank. You can also keep it handy 'just in case' something went wrong with your pump although I would keep the filter media in the sump so you will maintain some of the beneficial bacteria if you ever HAVE to use it and avoid cycling the tank.

Have a look at Melev's Reef - Sumps & Fuge's From how a sump works to diagrams of various models and how to DIY.
