Sump question?

Have two 55gal FW going but I just had an RO/DI filter and a 29gal tank handed to me. Is a 29gal large enough for to be a sump for a SW tank? I have never had an SW before and I would want to do it right. I would start off with FWLRO but would want to work up to a reef eventually. Any thoughts from those with s lot more experience? What do I need in a sump?
