Sump systems???

I'm new to the term sump. I have heard of sumps being used in saltwater setups. But I dont really know much more about them that that they exist for larger setups.

First what exactly dose a sump do and are they used in freshwater tropical fish systems?

Where can I find info on them? Is their a good diagram or drawing or really good pictures of how they are built and installed?

I'm in the research stage of planning a plywood/fiberglass tank build project and so I need to determine how to properly build it.

Sumps are basically giant filters. They can be used in freshwater. Sumps allow you to customize your filtration and hide your equipment and cords away from the display tank.

Google "Melev's Reef". That's the best site I know of for learning about sumps.
