What is the difference between a sump and a wet/dry filter? Which one is better?

A wet dry filter typically has biomedia (such as bio balls) and the media is not submerged. Water is trickled over it to conduct the bio cycle of proteins and waste. A sump contains (typically) sand, lr or lr rubble and the contents are typically submerged. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Sumps are also typically lighted if you want to grow algae...

A sump is simply a storage vessle that you can use to expand your water capacity, put heaters, skimmer, etc in and get them out of your main tank. What mjvicent described as a sump is more correctly labled a refugium.
