You can use sumps for freshwater. Its basically the same thing as a saltwater sump, except its freshwater.

The sumps are exactly the same.. you just wont need a protein skimmer for FW.

Here's my howto for reverse photoperiod sump/fuge if you want it. Baffle designs are neater though, and my howto doesn't show Durso, the installation of which invloved me accidentally cracking the bulkhead
