I tend to calibrate my refractometer every other time I use it for routine checking of SG and definitely prior to doing a PWC.

In my experience, when I calibrated with RO my tank water was testing at 1.024SG. When I took my refractometer to the local LFS along with a water sample and they calibrated mine using the calibration fluid - we were both showing a specific gravity at 1.026. So a bigger difference than .001+/- but that's just my experience.
