Hi Guys
It's been a while, I have been fighting Cyano for the past year which got me frustrated so I had to walk away for a while. To make a long story short I hit it hard and figured out it was the Reef Crystals, I switched over to ESV salt and the problem went away:D. Please pardon how bare the tank is at this moment (it wont be for long) but I upgraded my lighting system from MH/T5VHO to the Aqua Illumination Sol Super Blue LED system. Here are picks on how I mounted the modules and the tank before and after. Not to many pics as I'm letting to corals I have acclimate to the new lighting first.

I haven't put the system to 100% yet but in a couple of days I intend on going through different combinations of intensities and posting photos of the different settings. These lights really make the colors pop.

This one is set for daytime auto White = 50% Blue = 40% (My favorite setting so far)

Nice Keith. Are those the 3w Cree LEDs?

I posted in another thread the White/Blue percentages of my PacSun units for different color (K) settings from 14k to 20k.

At 20k, which is what I'm running after the 2 hour ramp up the white are at 60% and the blues are at 100%.

Yes they are. The SOL Blue goes beyond 20K easily and is way to blue for me. I'm running 70% white 60% Blue at the moment.

What about RC causes cyano? I haven't seen any in the reef I maintain.

I've had issues in the past with IO but never had problems with RC. I guess it all depends on the batch you get.

It could of been the batch, I had bought 2 200 gallons of RC salt a while back (at the same time) which lasted me a long time, that's probably why the Cyano was with me for a long time.

Try googling "Reef Crystals and Cyanobacteria".

Interesting. Seems like there is a link but it sounds like it has a lot to do with the individual tank - to many factors in play, and too many people using the product that aren't having the problem. It would be interesting to get all of their stories together and analyze them for any other common links.

I use RC on the reef I maintain and have never seen a lick of Cyano. It is well established though.

Never said it caused everyone who uses it to be getting Cyano, in my case and others it was causing the problem. Could have been a bad batch, it was 400 gal of salt mix, 2 200 gal boxes of salt mix bought from the same place at the same time. I'm glad it was that because I like the ESV so much better, it mixes crystal clear quickly, and you add all of the individual components separately which eliminates any settling of the different elements to different levels of the bag + the Mg, cal and Alk & PH levels are perfect for a reef. You should check it out.
