I am looking at getting a 4 bulb (HO T5) 4' long light fixture, that is "all on" or "all off". It is for a saltwater FOWLR tank and it is too bright with all four bulbs going. If I take out one bulb to lessen the brightness, will it cause any problems with the overall unit (or ballast)? I've got someone loaning it to me to try it out, so if I can get it dimmed a bit, I will buy it. If not, then I will give it back and keep looking.

If I could find a burned out bulb, yes. :) I'm not sure how easy that would be.

It depends on the brand of the housing unit. If it has a shield to protect the ballasts from water, then you can safely leave a slot empty. It would actually be safer to leave a slot empty than to run current through a burnt out bulb, imho. Good luck!
