I recently purchased a used Fluval G6 filter from
a couple who used it for turtles. I want to use it for
my saltwater tank. My first question is; would you use
this filter? If so should I sterilize it some how first?
And how would you sterilize it?
Thanks so much in advance for any help.

Soak all media and inside of canister with bleach and water solution. A day or two followed by longer soak in dechlorinated water. If it smells like bleach it is not gone...
I would not use a canister on marine tank but many do?
Maybe just for chemical or such if I could not set up reactors in sump...
In marine much more then freshwater nitrates can become an issue when media in filters becomes a nitrate factory.. Most use their live rock for bio and let sumps do most of the mechanical and refugium work.
Nice filter ! looking at a G3 for smaller freshwater tank...

Thank you so much for the reply. What would you recommend for filtration? I plan to use two penguin bio wheel 330s and a powerhead for circulation. I don’t know very much about sumps yet. It’s a 130 gallon(492 liter) tank that I’m transferring a salt water puffer into it from a 55 gallon( 209 liter)
Thank you!

For a sump all you need is a decent overflow which you can DIY if you handy and cheap [search youtube] or get a CPR or Reef Octopus for HOB.
If you are handy enough to drill and have the nerve on big tank then look at the Eshopps eclipse overflow .It comes with needed bit and can not fail do to power outages..

Get the Toms 'aqualifter 'with it .It is necessary IMO.

A sump can be a simple as an aquarium for the water to go to ,a sock or two for mechanical and then as much or little as you like besides a return pump...
With a big tank like your a sump will make so many things easier and allow for water top offs with out hard water lines in the tank..A 20long or bigger will do.
Return pumps are as easy as a good powerhear type pump all the way to DC digitally controlled ..
Look into the Jeboa DC pumps.. The 12,000 or 15,000 IMO are the way to go..
