Using filters for water changes

I have never done this but could you just remove the outtake (on a canister filter) and drain the water into a bucket instead of slowly siphoning out the water? Does anyone do this? Are there any obvious problems with this idea?

Never tried that but I have used a submersible power head. I attached a hose to the outlet and let it pump out.

There is no reason why you couldn't. The only thing that I can think of is you won't be able to gravel vac and you will only he able to take the water level down so far.
I know that the Fluval Fx5 has a special valve for doing exactly that.

I can only do minimal gravel cleanup since I have dirt capped with gravel in my tank, I use a electrical gravel vac for the cleaning that I can do
