I was looking online for a new protein skimmer for my sump and found reef octopus biopellet reactors and media reactors. What are these used for? What kind of media do you put in them? Do you use them in place of a skimmer or with the skimmer? Are they a good thing to have?

Reactors are secondary equipment. Used for various types of chemical filtration media such as activated carbon, granular ferric oxide, bio pellets/beads, etc...

Also there are reactors for keeping calcium levels in check.

Would they be better than a canister filter? Right now I have a canister filter and a sump

Why are you using a canister if you have a sump? If you keep using the canister make sure you clean it very often or nitrates will start to rise.

The canister has been on it for a while. The sump is newer. I just kept it on because I figured it was needed because it's what has the carbon and everything where the sump just has algaes and rock.
