I've seen the Eheim Ecco series referred to alternately as The Pro, the 2236, something called the Comfort Ecco; all seem rated for 80 gallons but with differing flow rates. Are these just updated model numbers/ I was considering one for my 55, but became wary upon reading about handle falling off and diminishing flow rates. I'm leaning toward a 2217 at the moment, but do love the design and convenience features of the Eccos.

The ecco series is different from the pro and/or classic series. The classics are the best for long-term reliability, the ecco series are designed to be more convenient but that doesn't mean they're a better filter. Also be aware that the eheims are all German, and they are rated differently than American filters as far as GPH vs tank volume. FIne for a lightly stocked planted tank, but not nearly sufficient for a heavily stocked tank of cichlids or other larger fish.
