If you're going to drill a tank for a drain and a return, would you drill them on opposite ends of the tank so the flow goes straight across, or next to each other with the return shooting away from the drain to sort of create a current that goes all around the tank like a vortex?

All my drilled tanks have "Mega overflows" since they are Aqueon.
Circulation is not a problem since I run decent return pumps.
That being said I would place them on opposite sides of the back , or maybe 2 returns with one in each corner and overflow in center back...
Have you seen the bean animal overflow?

They say it is full proof, but so is a bulk head with strainer..
I have E-Shopps Eclipse for my next build..

Ok, cool. I've got a (old, so who knows how worn out) 500gph pump and it's gonna be going to a dual nozzle loc line return. And yeah, I'm just going with a bulkhead and strainer for the drain.

I did it, for better or worse!

You gotta keep head height in mind when using a return pump. The higher the pump has to push the water the slower it's gonna be.
