My betta is becoming very aggressive, stopped working on his bubble nest after completing a very large one. I don't know what to do. He just swims to the back and tries to fight himself, swim up the filter, swims around the heater. I'm worried.

Also I don't know how to do water changes to a 10gallon tank.

Hello Jasmine,

I am very new to the hobby but I have been studying bettas for quite some time now. How long have you been with this betta in the current tank?

Have you tested the water recently for ph, amonia, nitrites, nitrates? What about temperature? Is it stable or does it change?

We will figure out what is going on, just help us help you.

Any changes on the diet? Is the temperature 73-80? I tried to read about bettas being hyperactive, one of the reasons is accelerated metabolism due to warm water. Anything above 80 might cause that.

I am no specialist by the behavior should be a direct result of poor temperature control. Bettas do well on warm waters, but they do not do well on heat peaks.

Let's try fixing that first and address the rest once you fix that. Do you have the budget for a new heater?

Since you have a new tank, this might be relevant as well: heavy flowing streams can upset a betta fish's comfort and may cause a change in behavior. Betta fish prefer soft flow from filters, although they are known for playing in the stream. It is important to make sure a filter does not produce too strong of a current in a betta fish tank.
