They look nice. I really like the colour. I have to be honest, I've looked at them in the shops and never really been fussed on them but those would change my mind.

They are fun to watch. The ones in the shops are usually so freaked out they are buried. Once they get to know a tank and have a favorite spot to hang out, they are out and about foraging with confidence often.

Found the snail

Tank is looking nice! What substrate is that - wasn't sure if there was glass bead in there?

I found what was left of the snail that was messing with my nitrates. It was a big one and about a third was all that was left.

Yes my substrate is all glass. I have tried different types of "inert" substrate over the past decade and this is the only thing I have found that truly delivers long term.

I always had Java and Anubis do well but a few months ago I added the other plants and moss in the glass with root tabs and they are growing well, I'm pretty surprised.

Looks good. I'm a big fan of Kuhli loaches myself. I had a Kuhli only tank up till a month ago. Now they're sharing with guppies. If you have a camera capable of taking quick snapshots try and catch picks of them when they take off. They shape themselves like question marks then spring up. Cool to see if you can get pictures.

Lol. I have not seen that! My khuli's are pretty chubby. They wallow around pretty slow. No shooting around in their tank.

I only ever see them do it at about 5am. When I had 14 you could usually see them gathering to worship the rising sun by swimming up and down along the end closest to where the sunlight was coming from. I have less than 10 now and I rarely see them before heading off to work now. It's worth getting up early to n try and see it at least once.

My Khuli's never get to see the sun. The tanks is located where it gets just about 0 natural light. It's sad, but it keeps the algae at bay.

What size is it?

I love everything from the mix of fish/reptiles to live plant/tank layout. I can tell a lot of thought and effort went into planning this and it paid off!


I am surprised that the carpet grass you have growing is setting in around the glass marble substrate. Very cool.


May I ask what you are using for a background? Is that like a black reflective pad for the tank? I am looking for "non-tacky" looking options for one of my betta tanks (seen in "Show-off" section). The one without the stone wall.

Thanks for the kind words. My tank is 29 gallon/30 long. I am surprised how well the mosses are doing. I started them by sewing together 2 hairnets and filling with the moss. Then using very little glass to keep it from floating free.

The background is from petsmart! It is one of the least cheesy ones I have seen.

Cool. I am thinking of trying something a little bit more simple for my Chi tank. Like a solid black so the fish and scenery stand out more.

my tank is only 10"X16" or so.

Java fern is growing fast. I had to move things around a bit and do a PWC.

Looking good! What sort of growth rate do you get with the Java fern? Mine is growing but fairly slowly (right at bottom of tank). Which I'm kind of tempted on as getting tired of pruning the hygro and ambulia each week.

Here is a pic from 5/1. I almost killed the Java with an aggressive salt water dip when trying to get rid of the ramshorn snails.

I then upgraded the lights and filtration.

Here it is on 5/27. I had trimmed off most of the older long stems since it was obviously coming back. It's the same size a the driftwood in the pic.

And then a shot from today.



It is bigger than the driftwood. I expect I will have to start trimming and splitting in a few months.

Once it get this big it becomes a khuli loach haven. They stay in the plant and hardly ever go underneath the wood.
