Here's a shot of my 25G partial reef. I say partial because it only has kenya tree coral. It's still a work in progress. I could probably use some more rocks, and I'm still waiting on my new skimmer to arrive. (other skimmers I've tried were to big for this size tank). At least in freshwater you can use live plants. Other than more rock and coral, I don't know how to spruce up the tank! Ideas and suggestions are welcome. I think it looks good so far though.

You could grow macro algae for plant life in a salt tank

I agree that you could use more rock , macro's are just as nice as coral if you lay them out right , this is one of the macro tanks I had to give you Idea's to what you can do,
they do require a lot of husbandry to keep them trimmed back , but well worth it for the work of art you can achieve

Nice. While we're on the subject, I just added an internal protein skimmer and now my glass canopy won't fit. What do I do?

Might light isn't supposed to be used over open water, or so says the box.

Yes it's a coral life dual T5 HO. Looked at home Depot and I can pick up some egg crate, or light diffuser ad they call it, for 15 dollars. Alas, my jumper problem is solved but the evaporation issue isn't :(

I had that same coralife unit on my 36 gallon tank. It has a plastic shield over the lights to protect it. No reason you can't have it over an open top tank, as this is how I ran it. Don't expect to keep anything other than low light corals with it though.
In terms of evaporation, why is this a problem? Evaporation happens everywhere and isn't something you can stop. An open tank has more evaporation, but you also have more oxygen exchange.
