Intentional Breeding success and failures
This topic is for the successful, intentional breeder. Please post your success stories or failures and what you think might have been key to either success or failure. Don’t get too detailed, this is just a starting a point for those who want to try a new species or try and breed ones they already have. Don’t forget those amphibians and crustaceans.
Species: Age if known: # of babies: # that survive 1 week # that survive 2 weeks: # that survive 1 month: The idea is to give other members an idea of what it takes to be successful or what not to do to avoid failure. Hopefully, this will also inform other members better of what they need to plan for if they want to breed a certain species. |

C. Trilineatus
Sorry, it was with my C. trilineatus
Here is my first one: Age unknown 21 eggs originally 1 week later had 19 babies 2 weeks later had 17 babies 1 month later 15 babies Today 14 babies doing great and gorwing fast. Success I think came from isolating the eggs and the babies until 3 weeks old. I fed the babies liquid fish flakes and grindal worms and they grew quickly and survival was good. I used a net breeder in the same tank as the adults. No shock thereapy and by the time they were eating algae provided a good food source. The key, ilsolate them and leave them alone. |

perhaps state the type of fish?
heres my first Cyaneorahbdos (Mouth brooder) #eggs unknown 3 1/2 weeks holding and 26 fry spat all survived untill now(1 1/2 mnths) except for one who had a crooked back so it got fed off. Must have been damaged in holding. All are now above 2cm Success came from isolating the female in her last stages, and letting her spit in a cage floating inside the display tank "Floaty". She was then moved into another tank to be fed up and released back into the main. The fry were left to grow in the floaty for 3 weeks untill they reached 15mm, then they got a 2ft tank to themselves. They were fed a constant diet of Crushed "Orca" sinking pellets, base ingredients assorted vegies, algae and shrimp. The key: Frequent feeding, Frequent water changes and once again Isolation. More to come if this thread takes off.

I am now breeding convict cichlids. They are certainly one of the easiest to breed (just add water).
About 200 eggs were laid 4 days ago. Almost all were fertile and have hatched. Parents are taking good care of the wigglers, and I estimate that at least 90% of the eggs laid have survived to hatch and swim. I'll update with more photos and journal entries as I go. Until then, check out the thread here: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/viewtopic.php?t=70916 |

I won't go into all of the fish I've worked with over the years. Currently I'm working with 3 species. Dwarf ancistrus, discus, and angel fish. Generally, the less demanding a species is to water conditions, the greater the success. |

I like this tread. [acronym:3cb64cffd4="Laughing out loud"]LOL[/acronym:3cb64cffd4] I'm work 3 fry right now.
Frist fry Crown tail male Betta, Vail tail female = I aded the male to a breeding tank and feed him Blood worms and Live brine shrimp for two days, the same time feeding the female the same thing. Then placed the female in a glass covering in the tank. Once the male made a bubble nest the female was released. 175 to 200 eggs 150 hatched 22days later 148 alive now. Feeding egg yolk and LBS with boiled peas for there belly. 2nd fry Apisto Cockato Orange Flash, This fry was hatched using a parentless method. I used a method I learned from a guy on this site and another Mematrix. This fry is going on day 11. I placed the eggs and the cave they where on into a 3gal holding bucket, I then added air stone as close to the cave and eggs as I could get it with out hitting the eggs. I added 3.5ml Hydrogen Peroxide 3% every 12hrs. for 4 days or an til they where wigglers. I then cut back to 1.5ml every 16hrs. for the frist day and a half of being wigglers. Then they where moved to a 10gal holden tank where they are now. here's the link to the storie and injoy http://forum.apistogramma.com/showthread.php?t=4079 eggs layed 150 Hatched= 150 wigglers= 150 free swimming on day 11= 120 water temp is 81f to help with the sexing and to hopfully get a 50/50 sexable rate from them. 3rd fry I'm working on a parentless fry of Apistogramma Nijsseni they where introduced into a 3gal holding bucket this morning around 8am. I've added a dose of HP 3% just not a half hr ago. There being held at a steady 80f. eggs=250+ more info as I get it. Thats my breeding steps and some of what I'm doing to kept them coming and going. Any question? |
