Is breeding plastic trap good for pregnant livebearer?
Is breeding plastic box good for keeping pregnant livebearer for several days?
2-ways or 3-ways or 5-ways? I have a pregnant platy, will give birth soon I think. |

ok, livebearers, when ready to give birth will develop a tube and their back end will sort of square off.
I always keep a close eye on my livebearers if i think they are going to have babies soon. You done want to stresss them out too much or they will drop the babies pre maturly and sometimes that causes more birth defects and deaths. If you see the end of her starting to become more angled than round then put her in the net. |

What other fish are in your tank and what size tank? Some livebearer's are more stressed out by breeder's net and boxes and can have birthing complications. If she is very close to birth, I would not move her. If your tank has enough hiding spots and depending on the other tank inhabitants, the fry may be fine. If you are moving her into a breeder box, do it sooner rather than later and keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't end up too stressed.

I agree with zags. If you are going to use a net or a box, then put her in there sooner so that she can get used to the little space. I use a 3 way breeder, and put her in about 1-2 weeks before I think she might have them. that way, i can watch her and see if she will be ok in the tiny space.
I have a female guppy in one right now, she just gave birth 2 weeks ago, and looks about ready to pop again, so I put her in last night, she is doing fine right now. I expect to see more babies within the next 2 weeks. |

I have both breeding net (now using for zebra denio and platy fry) and plastic 2-ways breeding box which is used for breeding guppy before.
I used a tank divider to separate the platy just one day before the platy delievery. The female platy doesn't eat her babies, but I removed her from the breeding tank to main tank after two days. Now I have 20+ baby platy fry. They are bigger than zebra denio fry, and I guess they even eat zebra denio's young fry less than 3 weeks old. Now I only see old zebra denio's fry which are big and more than three weeks older in the breeding net. |

Congrats on the fry. Fish are opportunists when it comes to food. Many fish will eat fry when the fry are available.

I had terrible luck with the breeding boxes and nets, so I set up a 10 gal divided breeding tank. Actually, I set up two of them, and they can be used for breeding or quarantine:
http://home.wowway.com/~tomstank/ind...s/page0019.htm Of course, once you own another tank, they are just begging to be used all the time, so one of them has been converted into a low tech, low light planted tank.
