Is line breeding acceptable?

For those who don't know what line breeding is, it's like inbreading but not quite as close, and is acceptable with most animals. (eg: cousins, uncle with neice, aunt with nephew)

When I had chickens, this was acceptable, but I don't know if it is with fish, especially if selling them to the pet stores.

Any info on this would be great.

Thanx.

Not only acceptable but common. Many of the fish strains available today have been developed by breeding offspring back to their parents. What the breeder looks for are recessive traits that they want to become dominant. Usually it involves coloration or finnage.

Just consider the varieties of goldfish or discus. Most of these exotic fish look nothing like their ancestors in the wild. It's because of breeding back to the F1 or F2 (first or second generation), that these strains have been developed.

Well if you really think about it though, this isn't really monitored in the wild, so I'm sure inbreeding happens anyways.

Thanx

The fish I plan on breeding together I believe would be like the uncle(I suspect he's the uncle since I bought him with their father) with a couple of his neice.
