is this a good fish tank to start with?

The tank will work just fine if you don't get monster size crayfish. In other words, no Cherax for you. If you have yet to purchase the tank, I'd go with a 20L instead. The more floor space the better especially if your wanting to breed.

As for the offspring the answer is yes, no and it depends. If you leave them with the parents it is likely very few will survive. They are just too tasty when the molt and babies molt a lot. You really should invest in another tank to rear young. A good trick to move the female to the growout tank to hatch eggs is to allow her to take up residence in a piece of PVC pipe. Once you know she has berries then just block off both ends of the pipe with your fingers, lift it out and place in growout tank. Once born at some point she will lose control of the young and that means it is time for her to go home. A word of advice, read up on the different crayfish. Some are way more aggressive than others.
