I just discovered this formation in my 55G freshwater community tank this evening and have no clue as to what it could be. Here is a list of my stock:

1 x Australian rainbow
2 x Blue gouramis
1 x Gold gourami
5 x Neon tetras
1 x Dwarf frog
1 x Betta
5 x Guppies
3 x Platys
1 x Cherry barb
2 x Albino corys
3 x Plecos
1 x Black skirt tetra

It looks spongy, grey, with some light and dark spots in places. It is located at the front bottom corner of the tank and jammed between the glass, gravel, and rock.

My suspicion is mold growing on algae pellets but how come it wasn't there yesterday? Doesn't mold need time to form over many days? Any food I put in my tank gets eaten immediately (or so I thought).

I have included pics from different angles so hopefully they will help.

Any suggestions? Appreciate the help!

Hi Dela,
Turns out it was old algae wafers as everyone suspected. It is long gone now - I cleaned the little sucker out!
Thanks for checking ?
