Let's say I have Platy Morph X and Platy Morph Y and I'd like to see them cross. Does it make a significant difference in regard to which is what gender?

This would be an interesting science project... I'd assume some traits are handed down by one of the genders (always), some will be a mix of both, and the others will be ruled by alleles ab+ab=aa+bb+ba+ba, where one of them is dominant, and you'll get 3 dominant and 1 recessive, but I guess this won't help much to answer your question.
