PREGNANT

pregnant or not ?
how can i tell if a platty is pregnant or not

large swollen abdomen


and if so what is the pregnancy period?

Are there protruding scales?(could be dropsy) if not, then it's constipated or pregnant

In livebearers, look for a dark gravid spot. It'll present as a blackish or just darker spot above the anal fin of the female fish. Sometimes this isn't as easy to see with darker fish however. As long as no scales are protruding, and you've got a mix of females and males in the tank, I would say there is a good chance that you have some babies a'comin.

A platy pregnancy lasts apx 4-6 weeks. If the fish keeps growing bigger I would assume it is pregnant. Also like devilishturtles said as the pregnancy gets further along you should be able to see the gravid spot. If the fish is dark colored you may not be able to see the gravid spot clearly till she is almost near the end of her term.
