The birds and bees... and the fishes?

I have a prolific breeding community of guppies and have witnessed the boys chasing after the girls, swimming next to them, etc, and have witnessed the girls actually giving birth. However, unless I'm missing the obvious, I have never witnessed the actual mating - only the dance. Seeing as they are livebearers, the boy must get his... guppy love inside the girl somehow... does he just spray it out and then she sucks it in... or...

LOL - this is a bizarre question, I know. But I am a curious girl!

LOL. Well curious, it's an interesting question and not that strange.

Although guppy love is not my idea of a romantic interlude, copulation actually takes place. The males gonopodium will briefly enter the females pore and the job is done. It happens so quickly that it is quite difficult to detect.

Good Question!

You can see it a lot better if you watch the bigger live bearers like mollies... trust me it's nothing special LOL they just kinda...jab the females and the females either stay there or go..OMG! Stop touching me! and then the males have to do the dance thing again...lol
