How old will the fry be when they start to get colour?

Mine take several months to really show their colors. They start out silver and stay that way for a while.

Are variatus platys compatible with fancy goldfish?

It is not a good idea to keep those two fish together. Goldfish are messy cold water fish while platies are tropical fish.
